Bachelor/Master_thesis

If you are interested in doing your bachelor or master thesis with us, please have a look at the research page and contact the corresponding group leader directly to inquire about available projects.

PhD_students

We are not actively searching for PhD students at the moment, but if you are interested in doing a PhD with us, there may be funding opportunities, e.g., via stipends. Please have a look at the research page and contact the corresponding group leader directly to inquire about available projects.

Postdoc_Positions

There are no directly funded positions available at the moment. For motivated candidates with above average qualifications, external funding for a joint research project is possible through, e.g., the Alexander von Humboldt foundation.

Teaching (Lehre)

We offer a number of courses in the areas of statistical physics, soft matter theory, and simulation methods. In addition, students at the MSc (master of science) level have the opportunity to carry out computer simulation projects in the group as part of the advanced lab course. All group leaders also offer projects for bachelor and master theses. Just contact us and ask for details.

The following lectures are offered on a regular basis:

  • Advanced statistical physics (Theory 6b, winter term)
This class builds on the bachelor level class "Theorie 4" (statistical physics and thermodynamics) and provides basic knowledge on topics like phase transitions and nonequilibrium physics
  • Computer simulations in statistical physics (6 CP, winter term)
This class is also open for students from computer science (master level) and gives an introduction into the foundations of basic computer simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo simulation and Molecular Dynamics simulations.

Other regularly offered classes include

  • Biophysics seminar (4 CP, summer term)
  • Modern simulation techniques in condensed matter physics (6 CP, summer term)
  • Theory of soft matter (6 CP, summer term )

Research

The research of the Condensed Matter Theory group is devoted to the statistical thermodynamics of solids and liquids, with special focus on disordered systems and glasses, soft condensed matter and complex fluids, and biologically motivated problems. Since our research heavily relies on extensive computer simulations, much effort is also spent on the development of new efficient simulation techniques. We perform our simulations on local clusters (conventional machines and GPUs) and on parallel supercomputers, e.g., at the John-von Neumann Institute for Computing in Jülich.
